With all of this talk of dogs and cats, anyone here have experience with pet rodents or mustelids or any non-goldfish-non-bird-non-canine-non-feline pet? I think Ferrets are fascinating, and some day when I don't have to conform to a landlord's pet rules, I think I shall try to take care of one.
It's surprising how few common animals out there are are still illegal to own as pets in most places, however, and how even few are even safe to keep inside without endangering yourself.

They're tough to photograph, but this is one of our two rats.

Ferrets are awesome pets to have. At one time I had 7 at once two huge cages connected together in their own room, fun fun animals. They are like mini dogs that never come out of puppy stage.
How can you deny this. I still play with them at the store's.
My first one got into a electric stove and found the 240v connection. He got out of his cage while I was out of town. That is when I decided they got their own space and didn't get to run free. I built a wooden wall that was high enough for them to not climb over that could be mounted to the door way of their room.
I stopped getting them, one because I could not support any place that sold Marshall breed Ferrets. A lot of places do not sell them anymore so that is good. They are s puppy mill company and do the same with Ferrets. They also breed a lot of health problems into their ferrets by using the same genetic line over and over. I had most of my Ferrets live about 5 years which is long but could of been longer. I lost them all to cancer of some type, usually Ferret Lymphoma.
The other reason I do not own them any more was their life span. Only two died to old age which was great they made it a whole 8 years. That's just long enough to get really attached. I picked up a few from the humane society, and one from a cousin that couldn't care for them I loved them. Some of the best pets I ever owned.
Sorry to share the negative stuff but I believe people should know what they are getting into and be prepared for the ownership of any pet you buy. Be ready for health costs, ferret proofing your home etc. You will also want to get two so they aren't lonely when your not around and give them plenty of fun things to do.
But do get one they are awesome. I am not sure where you live but like you mentioned a lot of places you either need a permit or have to let the city know you have. But there is no ferret police.
I really wanted a skunk after owning them, but they are illegal to own in my state.

I had some rats, they are awesome. If you get them when they are young they will love you forever. Males are much more lazy and affectionate than females. I also really like lizards and snakes. Cool to play with but they live for a long ass time, so make sure you get something interesting.
And I was really into freshwater aquariums for several years. Aquascaping and aquatic plant growing is very relaxing in the same way I would imagine gardening is relaxing. You get to create a unique environment and watch it evolve.
Next I think I will get some quails. They lay a shitload of eggs, and make hilarious noises. They love eating bugs too, so funny to watch them freak out. Plus I think I would enjoy making a hutch for them.

We've had hamsters before and the rats are so much smarter and much more friendly.

Rat's are very smart. Had hamsters for a summer that my sister couldn't keep and they had baby's. My cat's knocked over their cage had no idea what to do with them, but the ferrets did...
